Documents by readdle
Documents by Readdle might seem redundant on iPad now that the feature set of Apple’s own Files has improved. And, yes, it’s certainly less necessary now your iPad has traditional file system access and a means to create compressed ZIP archives – but that doesn’t mean Documents isn’t still useful.
The app makes it a cinch to connect to a wide range of local and remote storage types, and quickly import (not least with the new button), manage, and share items. There are built-in media viewers, enabling you to play music and search PDFs. The built-in web browser is sleek, snappy, and now supports private browsing.
In fact, privacy is one area in which Documents excels. If you want Files to remain open, but hide some of your browsing/documents away from prying eyes, this app’s optional Touch ID/Face ID barrier may alone make it worth the download.
Figure
Figure is an app designed to let you craft beats in seconds. It’s been around for a while on mobile, but the current iteration frees itself from irritating social media cruft. Create an account and you’re good to go.
Although primarily designed for one-fingered operation on a phone, Figure works really nicely as an iPad app. Blown up on the larger display its tactile interface affords you more precision as you tap out beats, construct melodies, and fiddle around with settings.
This isn’t an app for crafting a top-ten hit, note – at most, you’ll end up with eight-bar loops you can export elsewhere. But it’s fun, great for inspiring new ideas, ideal for non-musicians, and perfect for creating bespoke ringtones and alerts for your Apple devices.
Flyscreen
FlyScreen is an image manager and organizer with a twist – it’s primarily about screenshots. It also uses on-device machine learning to provide useful features that Apple’s own Photos can’t match.
The first is search by text. Type in a term and any image that includes matching words will be shown. Equally useful, tap any image to access its edit view. You’ll see all detected text within a field that can be selected – or copied in its entirety via the handy ‘Copy’ button. The app also provides fast access to images that are (very) similar to the current selection.
These features work with standard snaps too, providing an efficient means to extract text from photos. So whether that’s your need or you regularly have to deal with screenshots, FlyScreen is a boon.
Google news
Google News might seem redundant in the age of Apple News, but it serves a purpose. Like Apple’s equivalent, this free news app for iPhone learns as you use it, aiming to serve up stories you’ll be interested in. And in a similar fashion to Apple News, you can flag specific publications and topics you like to read.
Where Google News diverges from Apple is with the ‘full coverage’ button. Tap this and you can view a story across a range of publications, and check out a reports timeline – useful in an era of increasingly partisan coverage.
Beyond that, there are many other reasons to make the app one of your go-tos for news: fast access to any source’s list of stories; the means to hide any publication; a regularly updated briefing; an optional daily news email; and a stripped-back, cruft-free reading experience.
Graphite by becasso
Graphite by BeCasso is yet another filter app with aspirations of being an artist – or, rather, several artists. Load a snap, tap a filter, and you can instantly transform a photo into a pencil sketch, a watercolor, or even a blueprint.
These free iPad apps always produce results that are a touch mechanical, but Graphite’s attempts at art are some of the most natural looking and authentic we’ve seen. Head into the Edit tab and you can make further adjustments, to crop your shot or fiddle with saturation and brightness levels.
If you’re prepared to pay, you can take things further, choosing from a range of surface textures, and using your finger to make changes to the digital strokes. The control this affords you makes the IAP tempting stuff, but even for free, this one’s a must-have.
Kitchen stories
As you launch Kitchen Stories, you catch a glimpse of the app’s mantra: «Anyone can cook». The problem is, most cooking apps (and indeed, traditional cookery books) make assumptions regarding people’s abilities.
Faced with a list of steps on a stark white page, it’s easy to get halfway through a recipe, look at the stodge in front of you, reason something must have gone terribly wrong, and order a takeaway.
Kitchen Stories offers firmer footing. You’re first met with a wall of gorgeous photography. More importantly, the photographs don’t stop.
Every step in a recipe is accompanied by a picture that shows how things should be at that point. Additionally, some recipes provide tutorial videos for potentially tricky skills and techniques. Fancy some Vietnamese pho, but not sure how to peel ginger, prepare a chilli or thinly slice meat? Kitchen Stories has you covered.
Beyond this, there’s a shopping list, handy essentials guide, and some magazine-style articles to peruse. And while you don’t get the sheer range of recipes found in some rival apps, the presentation more than makes up for that — especially on the iPad, which will likely find a new home in your own kitchen soon after Kitchen Stories is installed.
Lake: coloring books
Lake: Coloring Books seems ideally suited to iPad owners who like dabbling in coloring – especially if they also own an Apple Pencil. The One A Day feature provides a daily freebie for 60 days, and each of the varied coloring books also offers you a free image to try your hand at.
The coloring experience is solid. Friendly tool panels sit at the side of the screen. You can quickly swap palettes or switch from a brush to a spray can. If you don’t want to go over the lines, a single button press gives you a hand there, too.

Mission to mars ar
Mission to Mars AR is an educational app about humankind’s exploration of the Red Planet, told through a range of photography, computer-generated imagery, quizzes and augmented reality experiences.
The last of those is the meat of the app – or at least its most interesting component. With the larger display of the iPad, you really become immersed as you explore the Martian surface, help Perseverance deal with hazards to complete objectives, and drive rovers across your desk or down your street.
The visuals are solid, and although the main interface feels a little like a blown-up portrait iPhone app, the AR components work well in landscape. In all, it’s a great mix of education and entertainment that’s a must-have download for anyone with an interest in our celestial neighbor.
Morpho converter
Morpho Converter is a conversions utility on a platform not lacking in conversions utilities, but this one stands out by virtue of it actually being really good – and having an interface designed for efficiency.
On the left of the screen, you can store favorite conversions, each of which has its own color icon, to help you quickly differentiate unit types. Tap away at the calculator buttons and all the answers immediately update.
On iPad, the screen is split in two. Tap a conversion and half the display is filled with related calculations – currency conversions for different values or alternate distance units to the main ones you originally chose. This can be a big time-saver and boosts the free version of the app, which is limited to eight ‘stored’ conversions. It’s top stuff, whether you pay or not.

NetNewsWire is an RSS reader — a news aggregator that lets you subscribe to website feeds, and have headlines and articles beamed directly to the app. In fact, for many people, it’s the news aggregator, having been a big name in various forms since 2002.
This latest incarnation is open source and therefore free from a price tag. It’s also free from ads, IAP, and cruft. Although gunning for efficiency, this app gives you all the most vital features: direct feed subscriptions, Feedly/Feedbin sync, dark mode, reader view, and feed import/export. In fact, it’s so good it might tempt you away from its premium-priced contemporaries.
Ology: science for kids
OLogy: Science for Kids is an iPad app from the American Museum of Natural History intended to infuse scientific knowledge into young people’s heads. It does this with a mix of book-like pages and interactivity, covering a range of subjects in its few dozen sections.
The entry point is a bunch of large cards, which don’t appear to be ordered in any particular manner. But every one of them when tapped opens up a new world for your resident youngling. They can delve into stargazing, find out why the T-Rex had tiny arms, and learn about biodiversity.
The more traditional pages are nicely laid out, akin to a colorful tome. But there are also game-like sections – such as searching for a range of species while birdwatching – and drag-and-drop quizzes. For free, it seems like a no-brainer download that will help fill young brains with the good stuff.
Sandbox – physics simulator
Sandbox – Physics Simulator is an entertainingly noodly mix of creation and wanton destruction. It gives you a blank screen and a bunch of icons, inviting you to select materials and draw components to fill the void. You can build levitating stone structures that can be filled with soil and seeds, at which point flowers will start to grow.
Alternatively, you can explore what will happen when lightning blasts firework powder, or when you drop a bomb on your beautiful creation. Hint: nothing good for the things you’ve made. But Sandbox itself is plenty good. Sure, it’s a long way from real life, and its old-school pixel art aesthetic screams retro.

Just installed it… used for 30 minutes.. had to swipe up to kill the app when it lost communication with the gimbal and locked up…
Editing a custom setting is crazy bad User experience… rather than tap/hold/anything to edit it, with it selected you go into custom again (who would guess?), and when you save, give it the same name (OMG I had to type the name in again!)
Then you find it didn’t save the changes..
I finally got it to save after about 3 tries..
Moving the camera doesn’t seem to work smoothly (from UI), it can lock if not in the right mode (I guess you set the mode on the device… as the app doesn’t talk to the device??? Oh, wait it does! Oh, maybe it needs to be set there because the app was written by someone else and they have no control over the app and device? no, that isn’t it… just stupid I guess…
Gave up on using this thing for the night…
Will try out the device on a shoot…
Didn’t seem to come with the cable to control the camera, wanted access to EVERYTHING, GPS even… why? Photos? Why? Need to use to control gimbal…
And the gimbal doesn’t seem to stabilize the camera enough to turn the zoom by hand without spinning the roll… so, yeah, I want to just lock the roll hard, using the thumb screw… they didn’t provide… no way to lock it for a pan/tilt (say if using at s theater to film?)
May not be useful at all to me..
