Basic or deluxe
The next question is whether you want a basic, lower-cost model or a deluxe model. The three main features of the higher-end models are: longer battery life, data logging functions and the ability to connect to multiple iPads simultaneously – a nice feature for two pilot crews or for connecting to a phone for backup.
Two models are available in this deluxe class. Bad Elf offers their Pro GPS with all of these advanced features, plus an altimeter, for $249.99. Dual offers their XGPS160 model for $149.95.

Having GPS information on your iPad allows you to view a moving map display on popular apps like ForeFlight or Garmin Pilot. You can watch yourself fly right across the sectional chart or down the final approach fix on an approach plate. It’s one of the best features of the iPad. But how do you get the GPS information in the first place? Many pilots are confused by this, so let’s keep it simple.
First, does the iPad have a GPS already? If it’s a 3G or 4G model, the answer is yes–there is a built-in GPS receiver. And the GPS is completely separate from the 3G/4G service, so you don’t even have to have an active data plan for the GPS to work. You could buy a 3G/4G model iPad, never activate your Verizon or AT&T service, and still have GPS data. (WiFi only iPads do not have a GPS).
But while the on-board GPS does work with all popular aviation apps, the reality is it was made for ground use and it’s not always reliable in the air. It has a tendency to drop offline, especially when switching between apps or when the iPad goes to sleep. It’s not necessarily a question of accuracy, but of reliability. You don’t want the GPS to lose its signal right at the final approach fix in the clouds. For this reason, most iPad pilots–even those with a 3G or 4G iPad–opt for an external GPS. At under $150, it’s cheap insurance.
So which external iPad GPS to buy? There are four options currently available:
So which one should you buy? With the exception of the Bad Elf Pro, they are all similarly priced and offer the same performance. The Bad Elf Pro offers premium features such as an LCD display and can connect to up to 5 devices. In the end the choice is really personal preference–do you want to plug in the GPS directly to your iPad or do you want to put the GPS on the glareshield and connect wirelessly? The advantage to the Bad Elf plug-in version is that you don’t have to charge its battery, as it runs off the iPad. The advantage to the wireless models is that you can place them out of the way, but you do have to charge a battery.
For those interested in a portable ADS-B receiver, the good news here is that all the versions currently on the market also contain an integrated GPS receiver. All 3 wireless models —Stratus for ForeFlight Mobile, Garmin GDL 39 for Garmin Pilot, and the Dual XGPS170 for WingX–supply precise navigation information along with subscription-free weather to your iPad. And there’s nothing else to do once you connect them to your iPad via WiFi or Bluetooth–simply run your app and go flying.
Whatever you decide, we think an external GPS is a must-have accessory for any pilot.

I’ve been impressed with this app. I use it with the Eachine E520S for recording the in-flight video and for monitoring the wealth of GPS information it receives back from the quadcopter.
It can also be used to fly the quad, but so far I’ve used the supplied controller instead. You can also use the display for FPV flight, but since you can’t legally fly beyond LOS here in Australia I’ve not really used that, but I think it could easily be done. There is a bit of latency, but this is not a racing quad so it’s not really a problem.
A couple of features I really liked:
1. It guides you through the compass calibration with a really nice animation that shows how to do it much more clearly than the explanation in the manual does.
2. It can be expanded to full screen if you are using an iPad.

Одним из недостатков бюджетной модели iPad 2 с поддержкой Wi-Fi является отсутствие модуля GPS, позволяющего определить местоположение устройства. Поэтому купив хорошее и дорогое навигационное приложение вы не сможете пользоваться им на модели без 3G. Тем не менее выход есть: если соединить iPad 2 с iPhone 4, то смартфон может передавать ему свои GPS-координаты.
Таким образом, активировав на iPhone 4 под управлением iOS 4.3 функцию мобильный хот-спот, вы сможете передавать на iPad 2 не только Интернет, но и координаты GPS. Теперь, находясь за рулем, вы можете сделать из iPhone точку доступа, а маршрут смотреть на большом экране планшета.
Но и здесь не обошлось без ограничений — передача координат происходит не в режиме реального времени, а один раз в минуту, что не очень удобно при активном передвижении по городу.

Как уже было сказано выше, iPad версии Wi-Fi 3G имеет встроенный приемник GPS сигнала. И соответственно мы можем использовать его для навигации, будь то пешая прогулка по незнакомым улицам маленького городка, или же автомобильная навигация по большому мегаполису.
Также если вы используете iPad как ваш персональный деловой помощник, и часто ездите в командировки очень удобно будет найти любой адрес в незнакомом городе. Имея в арсенале 9,7 дюймовый экран и хорошую автономность для этих функций он едва ли не идеален.
Да действительно пользуясь iPad-ом в роли GPS навигатора я очень доволен. Находясь в автомобиле, который движется со скоростью около 100 км/час iPad находит спутники буквально за несколько секунд, при этом точно определяет координаты. Ну, это уже в большей степени зависит от программ, которые вы используете для GPS навигации и карт, которые в них есть.
Ipad. gps и bluetooth
Теоретически можно GPS сделать и для обычного iPad Wi-fi. На зарубежных форумах я часто сталкивался с тем, что человек покупал bluetooth gps – подключал к своему iPad “с бубном” и у него был работающий GPS на обычном iPad Wi-Fi. На практике двое моих знакомых пытались такое проделать, но iPad не хотел работать в связке с bluetooth GPS. Ту ещё нужны определенные модели, которые планшет Apple готов принять.

Confusing the issue somewhat is that a Wi-Fi-only iPad can fairly accurately pinpoint your location under many conditions. As long as it can pick up a few Wi-Fi signals, it can use Wi-Fi positioning, which draws on a database of known Wi-Fi hotspots, to determine where you are located.

Сегодня я провел эксперимент, на который меня сподвигли комментарии к статье “Разница между iPad Wi-Fi и iPad 3G“. Процитирую тут один комментарий от cat1981:
“У меня в модели WiFi при отсутствии подключения к интернету прекрасно показывает мое передвижение на заранее загруженной карте гугл. И как это может быть без модуля GPS при отсутствии интернета?”
На этот вопрос я по сути и попытаюсь сейчас ответить.
Вот что я нашел тут.

Google Планета Земля будет отслеживать ваше местоположение, пока вы вновь не нажмете на этот значок.
1. Обратите внимание, что точность определения местоположения зависит от нескольких факторов.
Тип устройства. Любой iPad может определить ваше местоположение по данным интернет-соединения. Любой iPad с поддержкой 3G может определить ваше местоположение с помощью ближайших вышек мобильной связи. Любое мобильное устройство с поддержкой 3G также может определить ваше местоположение с помощью системы глобального позиционирования (GPS).
2. Качество доступного сигнала (GPS). Для устройств iPad 3G справедливо правило: чем : чем больше уровень мощности сигнала, тем выше точность позиционирования.
Что мы отсюда выясняем? То что – iPad с Wi-Fi вполне может вполне определить ваше местоположение по другим данным (не GPS). У меня сразу возникло подозрение, что у Google есть отсканированные координаты точек интернет-доступа. Решено было провести эксперимент. Я подгрузил в стандартное приложение Google карту Хуа Хина (город в Таиланде, где я сейчас нахожусь) и пошли в гости к друзьям.
По ходу смотрел как себя поведет определение местоположения. Оно постоянно прыгало, как бы по точкам за мной. Стало ясно, что ни о каком модуле GPS не может быть в принципе речи. В качестве примера приведу три скриншота, которые были сделаны на протяжении всего 10-15 шагов.
Как видно определение местоположения прыгает по всей улице вокруг. Да – iPad с Wi-Fi без интернета довольно точно определяет по сути не ваше местоположение, а точек, на которые он опирается.
Была мысль, что это точки телефонной связи, но они не могут в таком количестве раскиданы по городу – остается вариант – ближайшие точки Wi-Fi. В крупных городах, таких как Бангкок местоположение будет определяться точней, так как точек в разы больше, чем в мелких.
Думаю ответ я дал –
1) модуля GPS в iPad нет
2) ваше местоположение iPad с wi-fi определяет исключительно по ближайшим точкам доступа.
Второе утверждение правда – это мой не 100% вывод…

Алиса охотно играет с детьми и со взрослыми в города и слова, загадывает актёров и даже гадает. Скажите ей «Давай поиграем» и выберите, что хотите делать.
Для ещё большего удобства Навигатор помнит историю пунктов назначения. Можно, например, ввести адрес и прикинуть маршрут вечером, а наутро просто выбрать цель поездки из списка. История и избранное сохраняются в облаке и доступны на всех ваших устройствах, чтобы не теряться.
Если вы ездите на грузовом транспорте, активируйте в настройках Навигатора «Маршруты для грузовиков» и укажите параметры своего автомобиля. Тогда сможете строить маршруты с учётом ограничений: грузового каркаса (в Москве), фактической массы, РММ, грузоподъёмности, нагрузки на ось, движения с прицепом, высоты, ширины, длины и эко-класса.
